Social media helps users in times of the corona pandemic and a lack of traditional funeral services. Trending hashtags like GriefTok.

TikTok has launched GriefTok, a new hashtag designed to help people deal with grief after a loss or death. It gives users the opportunity to talk and learn about grief with other people affected, but also to share their successes in dealing with grief and celebrate life.

Grief and loss are popular topics on the social media platform. The hashtag #grief has already been viewed 1.4 billion times and the new hashtag #grieftok has already had over 43 million hits. Numerous users share their stories of death and loss as well as memories of loved ones using photos, videos and stories. Other hashtags like #griefjourney have over 338 million views and show the long and very individual process of dealing with grief.

Such videos share moments and important insights from therapy or explain how best to help grieving people. “Grief can be an emotion that is incredibly difficult to process alone,” says TikToker and GriefTok member Lauren Bulloch. On her account, she reports on her experiences with bereavement and knows from her own experience that a place for exchange and a community like on GriefTok can help significantly with dealing with grief.

GriefTok: Exchange for Loneliness

In 2020, the increasing number of deaths during the corona pandemic and the often missing options for traditional funeral services due to global lockdowns and travel restrictions hit many people particularly hard. Even if grief technologies like the hashtags on TikTok are unfamiliar, they can connect people with one another and give them a sense of community, especially in times like these.

“Everyone grieves differently, which is why many people often feel lonely, isolated and misunderstood after a bereavement. Communication and sharing your own feelings in a community can be very helpful,” says trauma psychologist Zoe Clews. Hearing that you are not alone in your grief and getting to know people with similar stories are also great help against loneliness. “GriefTok is a safe place where those grieving can find tolerance, empathy and support. The broader and more public discussion on platforms like TikTok could also lead to less stigma around topics such as mental health, death and dying in the future, said Clews.
