Since May, the basic price must be stated uniformly per kilogram or per liter. A sample from the consumer advice center shows that not all shops label the basic price correctly. The font size of the basic price on the price tag on the shelf also leaves something to be desired.

Basic prices help with price comparison

In view of the sharp increase in food prices, a price comparison is very important. The indication of the basic price for food is intended to make it easier to compare prices, even with different filling quantities and pack sizes. However, a sample carried out by the consumer advice center in August in twelve supermarkets, discounters and drugstores revealed deficits in the basic price information.

“The basic prices were stated correctly in only eight stores. In four stores, the basic price was not correctly marked for all products.”

Caroline Ludwig from the consumer advice center

This was the case, for example, with individually packaged bars, dried fruit or coffee. But it is not just the indication of the basic price as such that leaves something to be desired in some cases. The size of the marking on the price tags also varies greatly. While it is very legible in some stores, in others it is only very small.

Clear rule

The current price information regulation stipulates that the basic price must be stated per kilogram or per liter. However, this does not apply to goods weighing less than 10 grams, such as some spices. Small direct marketers such as farm shops and goods in drinks and food vending machines are also excluded.
