The claim
Apparently Robert Habeck didn't know that it had already been recorded and would have unintentionally blurted out why he "makes such stupid mistakes."
Our conclusion
The video is from 2019, the then leader of the Green Party talks about his withdrawal from Twitter. This context is not mentioned in the shared video excerpt. The fact that he didn't know that the recording was already running is wrong.
“Yes, I can’t explain it any other way. So now that I have to think about what the consequence is or where it comes from, this is the best thing I can think of to explain why I make such stupid mistakes. And the consequences must then be drawn.” – These are Robert Habeck’s words in the 15-second short video excerpt.
Users take this excerpt and share it again and again to suggest that Habeck constantly makes “stupid mistakes” and is aware of them. Because what is missing here is the context or when and why he said this. His “confession” is explained by the fact that he was not aware that it had already been recorded here.
The origin of the video
The video comes from an interview with “Welt” from 2019. Here Habeck is also welcomed as chairman of the Greens. At this point he was not yet Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection and Vice Chancellor .
The video is titled “Social Media Blues” because his exit from Twitter was discussed here. This was led to a statement by Habeck during the state election campaign in Thuringia. At that time he said: “We are trying to do everything so that Thuringia becomes an open, free, liberal, democratic country, an ecological country.” Since the Greens were in government in Thuringia at the time, users reacted extremely irritated.
He himself explains that he thought about his statement one sleepless night and wondered how it came about that he was “spouting such nonsense”. He would probably have allowed himself to be carried away by the “rough tone of Twitter,” as he describes it, and adopted that same aggressiveness in his words.
Farewell to social media
Since it's not his style to speak down like that, he decided to say goodbye to Twitter. The moderator asked: “You are a writer, you are a man of the word. When discussing with you, you always pay attention to your words. And now you're actually telling us that Twitter is so aggressive and has pigeonholed you? You’re a professional.”
And Habeck responds to this with the very words that are now being shared again and again in an incoherent manner as a short excerpt from a video.
He also published his decision to say goodbye to Twitter and delete his account here in his blog .
Conclusion
The video is not current, but from 2019. Here Habeck explains why he decided to turn his back on social media. This was preceded by a statement that he was led to make because of the harsh tone on Twitter.
The excerpt from the video is now being shared without any context as to why the Minister of Economic Affairs made this statement. It is stated that he was not aware that the recording was already in progress. But this is wrong.
