Ralf Kleindiek, State Secretary for Digital Affairs in the Berlin Senate Department of the Interior, told rbb on Wednesday:
Largest attack on the websites of the Berlin state administration
“Today we are experiencing the largest attack on the websites of the Berlin state administration. And this is part of an attack on all of Germany.”
This means that the websites of the Berlin authorities are accessible more slowly. The infrastructure is not affected, says Kleindiek. This means that data has not been leaked or stolen.
In Brandenburg, the police website has been disrupted since Tuesday. It was probably a so-called DDoS attack, police spokeswoman Beate Kardels told rbb. A flood of requests are made in order to paralyze the servers. The services for citizens were shut down so that no data could leak.
It is hoped that the technical problems will be resolved by Easter. According to their own information, the police are in contact with the Federal Criminal Police Office and other states. Kardels continued:
“We can't say anything about the people behind it yet, as the investigation is ongoing. We know that there are letters claiming responsibility, allegedly from a Russian cyber group, but the investigation must now show whether that is actually the case.”
It is still unclear who is behind the attacks. Christian Dörr, professor of cyber security at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam, told rbb:
“We have seen a lot of activity from Russia since the start of the Ukraine war. Whenever there are new aid packages or new statements from the West, they are usually accompanied by such attacks. But it could easily be someone who is making a joke.”
