100 of the 3,700 IT jobs are affected, and testing for suspected cases of corona is currently not possible.

The IT systems of the state of Carinthia, the district authorities, the state administrative court and the audit office were attacked by a hacker yesterday, Tuesday. The in-house IT experts worked overnight with the support of an external company and gained important insights: The international hacker group “Black Cat” is behind the attack. Five million dollars in Bitcoins are required for decryption software.

“It won’t be paid.”

“It’s not paid. The next steps will now be coordinated with the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the police. There is currently no evidence that data was actually skimmed from the system,” reports Gerd Kurath, head of the state press service, and points out that backups of all relevant data are available.

Hack attack on May 14th

According to an initial analysis, a computer was hacked on May 14th and the malware was introduced into the IT system.

“Around 100 of the country’s 3,700 IT jobs are currently infected. The servers were examined overnight using special software. Individual systems have already been put into operation in a secure area,” says Kurath, pointing out that the IT systems are only activated when it is absolutely certain that the malware has been eliminated. “The systems will be ramped up gradually. How long this will take cannot be estimated at the moment,” said Kurath.

No corona suspected case testing possible

The hacker attack also affected contact tracing in the district administrations

“No suspected case tests can currently be carried out. If you have a positive self-test – or if you suspect Corona – you should do a gargle test or take a PCR test in a pharmacy while adhering to the protective measures,” says Kurath. In the area of administration, efforts are currently being made to largely maintain operations. “Since we are dependent on the IT systems, the administration is in emergency mode. All employees of the authorities strive to deal with urgent concerns of citizens,” emphasizes Kurath.

Another press update is planned for today, Wednesday, 4:30 p.m. and will be broadcast online at https://land-kaernten.business-stream.at .
