The claim
Thomas Haldenwang, President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, is said to have expressed that it was within the scope of conceivability to “kill opposition members,” which certain circles refer to themselves and claim that Germany has now “arrived in the 4th Reich.”
Our conclusion
Due to the context, Haldenwang's last sentence about opposition members clearly refers to Russian actors who could frequently carry out attacks on Russian opposition members, i.e. Kremlin opponents, in order to further unsettle them and the public.
It would be funny if it weren't so sad: A video with Thomas Haldenwang that's almost three minutes long is already being shared, making it possible for everyone to hear and understand his entire statements - and yet only the last sentence is heard and it's so wrong reinterpreted that it already hurts.
The video
The video with Haldenwang's explanations is shared in various Telegram channels (see HERE and HERE
You can also watch the corresponding excerpt on YouTube:
The widespread video excerpt goes from position 57:12 to 1:00:10.
Apparently the following is perceived :
“Blah blah blah blah blah blah There is also a danger - I already mentioned it before - that opposition monitoring will take place much more intensively and that energetic action against opposition members, even killing them, seems conceivable. “
“I mentioned it before” – How almost three minutes are completely ignored
The disseminators of the video obviously assume that what they mean by “opposition observation” is that Haldenwang openly and openly states that vigorous action must be taken against them and that even killing is possible.
But what Haldenwang previously explained is apparently ignored:
He reports that Russian disinformation campaigns are running in Germany with the aim of dividing society and that the Federal Ministry of the Interior has put together a group from various departments in order to identify propaganda and disinformation at an early stage.
The complete explanation only deals with Russian disinformation campaigns and Russian agents and actors in Germany, not once about other groups of people.
And his last sentence is also about Russian actors in Germany: There is a risk that Russian opposition members who are in Germany will be observed more closely by Russian actors and, in the worst case, killed.
And this is not a new approach, just think of the murder in Berlin's Tiergarten in August 2019, which was most likely a Russian contract killing. Kremlin opponents are repeatedly the target of assassinations .
However, Haldenwang is certainly not wrong to fear that such attacks could also occur more frequently in Germany - and that is exactly what he addressed in this last sentence. Not to AfD supporters or lateral thinkers. But rather on Kremlin critics who could be intimidated by this and should not feel safe in Germany.
The meaning of the sentence is also clear in the Bundestag's summary of the hearing (see HERE
“In the future, it can be expected that Russian espionage will be “even more conspiratorial.” There are fears of cyber attacks as well as spying and even murder of Russian opponents living in Germany.”
Conclusion
Due to the context, Haldenwang's last sentence about opponents clearly refers to Russian actors who could frequently carry out attacks on Russian opposition figures, i.e. Kremlin opponents, in order to further unsettle them and the public.
Also interesting: Before Volodymyr Zelenskyj became President of Ukraine in 2019, he was an actor and comedian.
In this capacity, he appeared almost exclusively “clothed” with a guitar - which apparently upsets some people terribly. Why actually? – Zelensky once played the guitar (almost) naked in 2014. And now?
