Just over a third (37 percent) of students know what artificial intelligence for text generation is, but have not yet used it. Only 8 percent have never heard or read about ChatGPT. These are the results of a representative survey of 504 students between the ages of 14 and 19 in Germany on behalf of the digital association Bitkom.

Age and type of school decide

Among older people (17-19 years old), the proportion of those who have already used ChatGPT is slightly higher at 60 percent than among younger people (14-16 years old: 50 percent). The new technology was used most frequently by high school students (57 percent), followed by secondary schools (49 percent), integrated comprehensive schools and secondary schools (47 percent each).

“The interest in technologies like ChatGPT is extremely high among students. Current developments in generative AI create many possible uses for school purposes. If used correctly, young people can benefit enormously from AI,” says Bitkom President Achim Berg.

Of the students who have used ChatGPT, most do so for their homework (62 percent). Around half (52 percent) have already used AI to write texts. ChatGPT is also used for research purposes (27 percent), to prepare a presentation (18 percent) or to prepare for an exam (6 percent). The AI ​​chatbot has not yet been used in exams themselves. Around a quarter (27 percent) have not yet used ChatGPT for school.

Fear of unfair advantages from others

A large majority of 85 percent of young people surveyed fear that others at school will gain an unfair advantage through ChatGPT. Two thirds (66 percent) say they can improve their grades by using ChatGPT. 58 percent want to learn in class how to use AI correctly, 34 percent want to be allowed to use AI in class. 43 percent think that the use of ChatGPT for homework should be banned.

One thing is clear: AI is becoming increasingly important in all areas of society. We have to deal with the opportunities and challenges of this technology instead of clumsily and hastily calling for bans.”
