There were fatal shots fired at people in Hanau last night. The media speaks of suspected terrorism, authorities cite xenophobic motives.
Shots in Hanau and confusing conspiracy myths:
A man shot several people in Hanau on February 19, 2020. A video and a manuscript containing confusing conspiracy myths and xenophobic elements are now being attributed to the perpetrator. However, this has not yet been officially confirmed.
What happened: According to the police, shots were fired in two different locations in Hanau on Wednesday evening around 10 p.m. Several people were seriously injured and killed. The police immediately launched a large-scale manhunt and the criminal police began the investigation.

According to statements from witnesses, the police received information about a fleeing vehicle that was identified as part of the large-scale manhunt. The identified residential address was cordoned off and searched by special police forces.
Two more bodies were found. One of the dead people is most likely the perpetrator. The perpetrator is said to be a 43-year-old German who was not previously known. There are currently no indications of other perpetrators.
Confused conspiracy myths
In addition to the official reporting on the attack in Hanau, there is currently a video and a manuscript online containing confusing conspiracy myths.

Although both the video and the manuscript are attributed to the Hanau perpetrator, there is no official confirmation (at the time of writing) that the versions found online are identical to the script and video submitted to the authorities for investigation present.
The German Press Agency (dpa), citing security circles, found out that the video of the alleged perpetrator from Hanau had been online on YouTube for several days. This video is a “personal message to all Americans,” said the protagonist in the video.
Both the video and the manuscript contain hair-raising, sometimes politically extreme conspiracy myths with strong xenophobic tendencies.
We have both the video and the manuscript. The conspiracy myths described are sometimes very frightening and otherworldly; they have no basis in fact. What is even more frightening, if officially confirmed, is how much conspiracy myths can accompany such an act. The extent to which the conspiracy myths could have been a motivation for the attack would have to be clarified.
Hanau: xenophobic motif
At this point, the Bayerischer Rundfunk speaks of “suspicion of terrorism” and writes:
The authority said there was evidence that pointed to a right-wing extremist background.
The Hessian Interior Minister Peter Beuth also said that a xenophobic motive could not be ruled out.
