Prejudice-driven acts in a low-threshold form are everyday life in social media, comment columns and chats. Hatred on the Internet is primarily aimed at typical enemy images : gender, origin, religion, sexual orientation and thus often affects those who are also discriminated against in the analogue space.
Hate speech not only has a direct impact on those affected, but also on society as a whole. What is frightening is that as a result, many people are withdrawing from social media or no longer dare to express their opinions. The democratic discourse suffers as a result .
In order to counteract this, HateAid primarily wants to consolidate basic democratic values by providing immediate help to those affected by digital violence through advice and legal support and by sensitizing politicians and society to grievances. Strategies against digital violence
Disagree with hate online – here’s how to do it
Democratic discourse thrives on diversity. In many cases, you can respond to hate online with counterspeech . Those affected and their allies specifically address the hate messages: derogatory comments, false statements, insults or threats do not go unchallenged, but are refuted with good arguments. At the same time, you can show solidarity with the people who were attacked.
