Treatment or surgery for dogs and cats at the vet or animal clinic can quickly cost a lot of money. You can protect yourself from this financial risk with pet health insurance. But: The policies are expensive and not all treatments are paid for, as the Rhineland-Palatinate Consumer Center points out. In addition, usually only healthy animals are insured. You can take precautions with regular reserves.
Health insurance for animals? Be well informed before finalizing
“The differences in prices and the insured risks of animal health insurance are enormous,” says Anna Follmann, insurance expert at the consumer advice center.
She advises you to do thorough research and compare rates and conditions before taking out pet health insurance. Animal health insurance can be taken out as surgical cost and comprehensive health insurance.
The more comprehensive comprehensive health insurance is usually three times more expensive than surgical insurance. And: the older the animal is when the contract is signed, the higher the contribution will be. For older animals or those with previous illnesses, insurance companies sometimes require a veterinary report on their state of health. If an animal is sick when the contract is concluded, there is usually a waiting period of three months from the start of the contract. Animal health insurance reimburses veterinary and surgical costs for medically necessary treatments, medication, accommodation and diagnostics.
Many insurers do not cover castration or sterilization without medical necessity or vaccinations. A tattoo or identification with a chip are often not insured either. Depending on the effort, veterinarians charge between one and four times the fee. Insurance companies do not pay every rate. It's worth taking a look at the insurance conditions here. Insurance usually only covers 80 percent of the reimbursable costs. Some insurers only cover veterinary costs up to a certain annual amount - for example 2,500 euros.
