In July 2023, an announcement by Elon Musk caused a stir: Twitter should reinvent itself as “X” . This got the minds of social media users boiling and led to numerous discussions about the future of the platform and how it would work. In the midst of these troubled waters, a particularly interesting rumor emerged that spread rapidly: the "Like" button, previously a heart-shaped symbol, was supposed to turn into an "X" when you clicked on it. But is there really any truth to this claim?
The claim: A heart becomes an “X” when clicked
When an account claimed that the like button was now a 𝕏 and no longer a heart, the rumor began its triumph on a social media platform. The request to “like” the post to check the change for yourself attracted many users, and curiosity took over. Comments like “Wow, they completely redesigned the like button!”

We also tried it ourselves and clicked “Like” on various tweets. The result? No transformation into an X. It remained a heart. We were unable to find an official statement from Twitter or reputable sources confirming this claim. At the time of writing, help page stated that when clicked, the heart button turns red to indicate "like".

The rating: False
Based on the facts, we rate this rumor as “false”. It appears to be another social media scam spread through lurid statements and curiosity. However, this is not the first time such rumors have made the rounds.
The background: Twitter and fantasies
Similar false claims about the Like button appeared on Twitter as early as July 2023. Some posts claimed the button would turn into a Roblox animation or a sports logo. Apparently some users enjoy creating such fantasies and sharing them with others.

We have even debunked an alleged prediction of the rebranding of “ . It's fascinating to see how creativity and the spread of misinformation go hand in hand.
Twitter as “X”: Reality
Let's leave the fantasies aside and consider the actual changes that Twitter has undergone. Elon Musk's announcement that he would rename Twitter "X" sparked much speculation about the future of the platform.
However, the actual changes were not limited to changing the name and logo. Twitter also introduced some new features to improve user experience. These include a revised user interface, new options for personalizing profiles and expanded support for multimedia content.
Why “X”? The vision of Twitter
The decision to rename itself “X” was part of a larger vision that Twitter was trying to achieve. The company no longer wanted to see itself as just a microblogging platform, but as a place of exchange and networking that is constantly evolving. The “X” was intended to represent the versatility that Twitter wanted to offer its users – the ability to share different perspectives and connect with people around the world, regardless of their location or background.
With this in mind, Twitter has also taken a number of measures to protect users and encourage positive interactions. The moderation guidelines have been revised to address hate speech, harassment and misinformation. Partnerships have also been established with organizations that promote digital education and online safety.
Twitter “X”: The reactions
Of course, reinventing Twitter as “X” has drawn mixed reactions. Those who had known the platform since its inception felt a certain nostalgia for the old Twitter. For them, the heart symbol was a symbol of Twitter culture and a familiar element that was now gone.
Others, however, welcomed the changes and found that the “X” better suited the new, diverse direction of the platform. The revamped interface and personalization options were seen as a positive sign for Twitter's future.
The rumor lives on
Despite the clear facts and the classification as a “hoax,” the rumor about the “Like” button turning into an “X” cannot be completely put to rest. Such false reports often have an astonishing life of their own and appear again and again on different platforms and in different versions.
This is an example of how quickly rumors and fantasies can spread in the digital world. In times of social media and direct communication, it is even more important to question and examine critically before believing such claims.
Conclusion: reality vs. fantasy
The transformation of the “Like” button on Twitter into an “X” is and remains a fiction fueled by pure curiosity and the spread of false information. Twitter may have reinvented itself as “X,” but the core of the “Like” button remains.
You shouldn't be blinded by fantasy, but rather concentrate on the real changes and developments in the world of social media. Twitter may have changed, but its essence as a platform for exchange and networking has remained - and that's worth a like.
