This is how you keep your home warm – and your heating costs low!

How can I reduce my heating consumption? Many people are currently asking themselves this question in view of the falling temperatures. Meike Militz, energy expert at the Baden-Württemberg consumer advice center, gives savings tips. The three most important questions:

What do the numbers and symbols on the thermostat mean?

The “star” symbol represents a snow crystal. This is the frost protection setting to prevent the heater from freezing. At this setting it heats to around 5 degrees Celsius.

  • The number 1 means a room temperature of around 12 degrees.
  • If you turn the thermostat to 2 , the room is heated 16 degrees
  • at 3 to 20 degrees .
  • At level 4 pretty cozy at around 24 degrees
  • Level 5 brings a room temperature of 28 degrees and should not be set constantly.

The popular belief that a room will warm up more quickly if the heating is on level 5 is wrong. The heater doesn't heat the room faster, it just runs longer because it raises the temperature to 28 degrees - and consumers pay more accordingly.

Do all rooms in an apartment need to be heated?

Yes! Even in rooms that are rarely used, the temperature should be at least 16 degrees to prevent mold from forming on the walls. Since warm air can absorb more moisture than cold air, the moisture can cause mold to form on cold walls. In addition, the walls in the apartment cool down so much when they are switched off that reheating them incurs more costs. It is therefore better and cheaper to heat the rooms evenly.

Central heating is not turned off at night: How can you still save on heating costs without freezing?

Particularly in apartment buildings, the heating is often not turned off at night because it may be needed at night due to shift work or other sleeping habits. In order not to heat the apartment unnecessarily, tenants should install programmable radiator valves.

These are available at hardware stores for little money and can also be installed by laypeople. The valves can be used to program exactly when the heating is running and when it is resting. This means you can save on heating costs while you sleep without leaving the bathroom cold in the morning.
