People regulate their body temperature by sweating. But our pets such as dogs, cats, hamsters, rabbits and guinea pigs have little or no sweat glands.

In hot weather: Sufficient water

It is essential to ensure that you drink enough fluids. That's why you should check and refill the animals' water bowl regularly. When it's hot, you should also remember that water evaporates more quickly than usual.

You can also give rodents fresh and juicy green food.

Birds also consume additional fluids through their diet. So it makes sense to provide them with fresh food. And do this several times a day with small portions so that fruit, for example, does not spoil.

If you want to encourage your pet to drink, you can try running or dripping water. They often find that more interesting than the water bowl.

Make sure you cool down

This does not mean that you should put your animals directly in front of the cold ventilation of your air conditioning system when it is hot. But if there are cool places in the apartment or in the garden, you can make it comfortable there. Some cool stone slabs and tiles or a quiet place in the cool basement have a very good effect. You can also moisten cloths and place them over enclosures or cages, or tie them around your dog's neck. Cats often also like cherry stone pillows from the freezer.

Rabbits, guinea pigs and even birds whose cages or enclosures are in the garden are often exposed to the sun. Here you should definitely keep an eye on the position of the sun, which changes throughout the day.

If you have the opportunity, you can offer your animals a small “pool”. For many species of birds, a bowl with a little water can provide a welcome refreshment in the heat.

If you have dogs who like to go in the water, you can plan a visit to the pond or lake when going for a walk.
It is advisable to go for walks in the early morning hours or later in the evening. If you are forced to go for a walk during the day, you should avoid letting the dogs walk on the hot asphalt. We have already reported on this: HERE

And don't forget: fish! Summer temperatures can also be fatal for fish if the water in the aquarium becomes too warm. So you shouldn't neglect to check the water temperature regularly.

Avoid excessive draft

Even if we humans gratefully welcome a fresh breeze that moves through the rooms, cages should not be placed in direct passage. Yes, pets also need fresh air, but too much of it can also lead to illness.
