Heat pump stolen – a case for insurance?

After much consideration, the Claasen family (name changed) from the Steinburg district decided to move away from oil heating and invest in purchasing a heat pump. The system is installed by a specialist company. The heating is running. After the family comes home from a trip together, the surprise follows: the system was stolen while they were away. A clear case for the insurance company, think the Claasens. But she doesn't want to pay. The heat pump was not in the house, but in front of it, which is why the theft was not covered as standard by the existing homeowners insurance, according to the insurance company. Unfortunately, an inspection by the VZSH showed that the family was left with damages of 15,000 euros.

Contact the insurance company

“Unlike a heating system in the basement or boiler room, a heat pump is usually installed on the property outside the building. The system is therefore not automatically included in the residential building insurance,” explains Dennis Hardtke, insurance expert at VZSH. He therefore advises: “Anyone who invests in a heat pump should definitely check the scope of their existing home insurance.” To do this, consumers should contact their insurance company at an early stage and ask whether a heat pump is included in the insurance cover and, if necessary, include the protection of the system in the insurance contract allow to be recorded. It is important that possible insurance coverage is confirmed in writing or included in the insurance contract.

Check obligations to cooperate

The insurance expert also recommends asking about so-called obligations to cooperate. “Duties to cooperate are measures that the policyholder must take to keep the damage event as low as possible. If obligations to cooperate are violated, the insurance company can refuse part or all of the service,” explains Hardtke. In the case of a heat pump, possible obligations to cooperate could include fencing around the property or the heat pump system, as well as installing it on the house wall at a height that is more difficult to reach.
