Achieve greater efficiency and avoid costs during the heating season
“With exorbitant increases in gas prices, it is important to be frugal in order not to place an even greater burden on your own household budget. 65 percent of Saxon households heat with gas. But district heating customers, for example, should also note that heat in their own four walls will be more expensive for them.
Lorenz Bücklein, energy consultant at the Saxony Consumer Center
Space heating accounts for around 70 percent of energy consumption in private households, and hot water preparation accounts for an average of 14 percent. The savings potential here is particularly high. At the same time, interior rooms must be prevented from cooling down so that no harmful mold can form on walls and window recesses due to the cold, humid air. If consumers follow the following tips, they can use heating energy sparingly:
Use radiator thermostat consciously
Thermostats allow you to regulate the room temperature.
“We recommend 20 to 22 degrees. But it should be noted that each degree less reduces energy consumption by about six percent. If you are away, a reduction to 16 degrees is conceivable.”
Lorenz Bücklein, energy consultant at the Saxony Consumer Center. ""
Programmable or remote-controllable thermostats help with conscious control. They can also be easily changed in rental apartments.
Bleed the heater
Air in the radiator leads to less heat radiation. A ventilation key - available from specialist retailers or from the consumer advice center's energy advice center - provides a remedy here. In acute cases, a specialist company can help.
Do not close the radiator
Efficient heating is possible if the radiators are surrounded by sufficient room air. They should not be hidden behind panels or curtains and furniture should be placed at a minimum distance of 30 centimeters from them.
Proper heating and ventilation during the heating season
Cross-ventilating several times a day for a few minutes helps to avoid excessive room humidity and thus protect against mold formation. This can be checked with a hygrometer - it should not show more than 55 percent, depending on the building (see graphic). When the windows fog up from the inside, it's time to provide fresh air.

For homeowners: ensure the right setting
Instead of relying on the factory setting, the flow temperature should be adjusted or reduced. That brings ten to 15 percent savings. Switching off the heating temporarily, for example at night or during the day when no one is in the house, also saves energy. Weekly profiles allow you to adapt the settings to your personal habits. With a hydraulic balancing, the specialist company adjusts the flow on each radiator after a previous calculation: heat is released more evenly, heating losses are avoided and the power consumption for the heating pump is reduced.
Thermal insulation avoids losses
Subsequent thermal insulation of external walls, roof and ceiling surfaces can significantly reduce the building's heat loss. Even smaller measures make sense. These include, for example, the subsequent sealing of windows and doors or the thermal insulation of radiator niches, roller shutter boxes and heating pipes in unheated areas.
