The consumer advice center recommends setting the thermostat valves correctly. This saves money without sacrificing a comfortable room temperature.

Reinhard Schneeweiß, architect and energy consultant at the consumer advice center, explains how it works:

“You often imagine the valve on the radiator like a tap that you turn on and off,” explains Reinhard Schneeweiß. “But thermostatic valves actually do more – they maintain a certain temperature in the room.”

For example, if you set the controller to level three, this usually means around 20°C air temperature. If it is colder in the room, the valve opens and the radiator becomes warm. If it is warmer, the valve closes and the radiator cools down. If the set temperature is reached or exceeded, the radiator can be cold even when the valve is turned on.

What does this mean for energy consumption?

“It’s very simple,” explains Schneeweiß. “The radiator is often turned up to full capacity in the hope of quickly warming up a cold room. In fact, only the target temperature is increased – sometimes to 26°C or more.”

Result: The heating runs at full speed, the room becomes warmer than needed, heating energy is wasted. A correctly adjusted thermostat valve, on the other hand, saves heating energy without sacrificing comfort.

Programmable thermostatic valves for individual heating

So-called programmable thermostat valves are particularly smart. Here you usually set the desired room temperature to within half a degree. You can also choose different temperatures for different times of the day. Advantage: The temperature is significantly reduced at night and during the day when you are away. The apartment is comfortably warm when you get up in the morning and at the end of the day.
