Yes, I know, this thing is old and I've tried it in the past. Still, it's kind of fun.

Hello, greetings, hello: how we speak and where. Today I stumbled across this fascinating language map again on Facebook. As a Westphalian in Vienna, I noticed years ago how many regional terms I use, without really noticing it before.

When I talk about Düppe at breakfast in the morning or when you get drowsy when you hear some fake stuff, it irritates my colleague Tom rather than helps him. Yes, we all have our language idiosyncrasies and these idiosyncrasies can be used to determine “where we are coming from”. And that’s exactly what the language atlas does.

On Spiegel.de in the language atlas you can find out:

With over 90 million speakers, German is the most widely spoken language in Western Europe. There are major regional differences within this language, which are recorded “Atlas of Everyday German Language” (ADA) The Swiss say quarter from the clock, the East German says quarter past eleven and the Upper Austrian says quarter past ten. Everyone means the same thing, namely the time 10:15.

Since speakers can be located in this way through their language, the “Tages-Anzeiger” and the developers of “Dialäkt Äpp” created this web app in collaboration with “Spiegel online”. There is also a smartphone app with even more functions.

With “Grüezi, Moin, Servus” a rough location in the entire German-speaking area from Zermatt to Husum (1100 kilometers) should be achieved. Localization down to the village level is not possible with the ADA data set. Around 30 towns are recorded in Switzerland. Assigning your dialect to a city that is a maximum of 50 kilometers away from your place of origin would be very precise. If you want something more local, we “Dialäkt Äpp” and “Voice Äpp”, , with around 550 recorded towns.

Can we locate you within German-speaking Europe based on language characteristics? Tell us how you speak and we'll tell you where you come from.
