Scams like the grandchild trick are not new, but they are very current: Fraudsters repeatedly trick their victims into believing they have a family relationship in order to get their money.

Money gone: A man (65) from the municipality of Nettersheim fell victim to a scam: He received a call on Monday suggesting financial help with the purchase of a condominium for the benefit of his daughter, her father-in-law.

This ultimately resulted in the handover of money in the five-figure euro range.

The police advise:

Be especially careful when it comes to your money. Do not conduct financial transactions over the telephone. Relatives should warn older family members about scammers.

The fraudsters' scams are varied. Fraudsters usually use very sophisticated methods to get their victims' money. The police crime prevention department has summarized topics and tips on its website .

Note:

If someone calls you and demands large amounts of money, you should immediately become suspicious. Consult your relatives personally and independently using the phone numbers you know.

Don't let yourself be put under pressure and just hang up if you feel suspicious about the call. And no: “Hanging up is not rude!”.

Always inform the police immediately and if you suspect that a fraudster is targeting you, call the emergency number “110” straight away!
