The fact check

No, you don't get a heart like that by too much pork, but rather in a different way. Nevertheless, what we see here is 1. not a human heart at all and 2. it is quite rare in our latitudes.

The original was posted on October 12, 2018 by Anatomia é on both Facebook and Instagram . It shows a pig heart with cysticercosis caused by the larvae of Taenia solium (pork tapeworm).

Although humans can also contract cysticercosis by eating raw or undercooked pork infected with pork tapeworm larvae or accidentally ingesting infected feces, this is rare in countries with high hygiene standards. However, the cysts can also form elsewhere, for example in the brain and many other places in the body.

Good tips to protect yourself from pork tapeworm:

  • Only consume pork when it is well cooked!
  • Wash your hands! People in the food sector in particular should wash their hands carefully.
  • When traveling to areas with poor sanitation standards, avoid foods that may be contaminated by human feces or that have been undercooked.

Conclusion:

The photo shows a pig's heart suffering from cysticercosis. This is caused by larvae of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium).

Even if the heart does not belong to a human, it is entirely possible for people to become infected with the larvae of the pork tapeworm and then develop cysts somewhere in the body.

To do this, people must consume uncooked, infected pork or ingest infected feces orally. In countries with high hygiene standards, pork tapeworm is rarely an issue and is under control. Nevertheless, as with many other diseases, the following applies to prevention: don't forget to wash your hands!
