If you're reading this because you saw it on Facebook before, I have to tell you that you're probably already old!

Well, not old in the sense of “ tomorrow we’re going to the senior citizens’ home ”, but old in the sense of “you should already be ahead of the 4 or have already been ahead of them repeatedly”. How do I know that? It's simple: you're on Facebook!

This is not a new finding, but rather a statement that can be recognized from the observations of the last few years. We who felt right at home at 80s and 90s parties in the pre-Corona times, at shooting festivals and in discos, we are the Facebook generation.

We're not on TikTok. No, we don't understand Snapchat either. We like Instagram, but we don't do that much there. But Facebook, good old Facebook. There we find our classmates (from way back) and the people from the running club on Wednesday evening.

Saferinternet 's Youth Internet Monitor . Briefly to explain: This is an evaluation of the social media portals, which are very popular with young people.

The data collected came from 400 young people between the ages of 11 and 17. They were surveyed by the Institute for Youth Culture Research in November & December 2020 about their use of social media.

Where are the young people?

And then it becomes clear. The annual evaluation has so far shown that in 2016, 55% of all young people used Instagram, and in 2021 it will already be 84%. Sure, the leading YouTube and WhatsApp are currently used by over 90% of young people, but this number is stagnating. TikTok, to note, is the second winner. TikTok is a social media platform on which people can sing playback songs, film themselves and then use effects to enhance the videos.

Facebook, on the other hand, has only been of interest to a third of all young people for years; most use the platform rather passively. Twitter, on the other hand, is hardly a topic at all among young people.

So if you're reading this because you saw it on Facebook, you're probably already old.

Old man, is this bad now?

Of course I let myself be asked this question (in exactly this tone). No, that's not bad. Every generation has its platform and its preferences. I don't want to sing and dance on TikTok. I don't even know if I would watch people my own age doing any moves there (I'm just imagining my colleague Ralf on TikTok. No, I'd better not imagine it).

And that's all fine too. Without blaming anyone. Rather, I am grateful for this diversity. And I'm looking forward to exchanging links to music videos from the 90s with my "friends" on Facebook again next weekend. Man, how old I have become!
