WhatsApp wants to introduce some new options such as: B. the ability to edit text messages. Another new function concerns the online status of users. In the future it should be possible to hide this! WABetaInfo portal .

“Last online” and “Online”

With more than two billion monthly active users, WhatsApp is the world's most used messenger. Previously, hiding online status was not possible. Only the “Last online” display could be hidden. This is also one of the points of criticism that many users make towards WhatsApp. They want the ability to hide their online status too.

“Last online” shows when the user was last active on the WhatsApp platform.
If this function is not disabled, even the time is displayed. Under “Last online”, users have the opportunity to choose WHO can see this time. The choices here are: “Everyone”, “My Contacts”, “My Contacts Except…” and “Nobody”:

But be careful: whether the user is currently online – this status is ALWAYS displayed. That should change now.

“For example, some users want to use WhatsApp without being disturbed by others, or they feel like they are being followed by someone.”

WhatsApp has now complied with this wish and is creating the option to deactivate online status or is developing a function that allows users to choose who can see when they are online. This feature should be available in a future update.

WABetaInfo has published a screenshot of this:

The screenshot from WABetaInfo shows which options will be possible with WhatsApp for online status in the future. The user can configure who can see when he or she is online using two options: “Everyone” and “Like last online”. So either “everyone” can see that you are online or only those for whom “last online” is visible.

“For example, if you select My Contacts for Last Online and Last Online for Online, this means non-contacts won’t be able to see when you’re online.”

t-online describes why WhatsApp does not offer the same selection options for online status as for “last online” as “strange”, but points out that “the WhatsApp parent company Meta does not want to make this function too easy to switch off. Ultimately, it creates a certain level of social pressure to respond to messages promptly - and thus intensify usage overall.”

It is still unclear when this new function will come. It is speculated that it could happen with the next update. Currently testing is still underway.
