The current gasoline prices continue to climb, and now Green Party politician Anton Hofreiter is said to have advised that people who can no longer afford gasoline should simply take out a loan to buy an electric car.
However, the quote is not only distorted, it is not even current.

The alleged quote on the sharepic

A sharepic is being distributed on social networks, which shows the alleged quote in quotation marks next to a photo of the Green Party politician Anton Hofreiter:

The alleged quote from Anton Hofreiter

Hofreiter is said to have said:

“If you can no longer afford gas, take out a loan and simply buy an electric car.”

The supposed source of the quote

The sharepic was particularly widespread on Twitter, whereupon many users reported the tweet because no source for the quote could be found. The tweet was then switched to “not visible” .

The creator of the tweet then cited Hofreiter's interview with “Welt” as the source. The interview can be seen on YouTube:

What Hofreiter says in the interview

So you can watch the interview that is supposed to be the source of the quote for yourself. But if you don't have the time or the opportunity to do that, you can read the quote on which the sharepic is based here.

The “Welt” interview with Anton Hofreiter, which from June 3, 2021 and is therefore not even current, is about the debate at the time about rising CO2 prices, which would have started a “populist fuel rage campaign” without it To give citizens a climate protection incentive and social compensation.

When asked by the reporter that an increase in prices would be unfair and that commuters in particular would suffer as a result, Hofreiter replied at minute 3:06:

“That's why we want what we call a climate justice fund for people with low incomes, who should get €9,000 to buy a pollution-free car, and the rest as an interest-free loan, and we want to take these funds from the income from the CO2 price there are no losers.
[…]
There must be the possibility that anyone who wants to, so to speak, can afford an electric car.”

He also criticizes the fact that he only hears from the Union and the FDP about increasing the CO2 price without making it more palatable for citizens to switch to electric cars.

Specifically, he doesn't say that you should "simply take out a loan to buy an electric car", but rather talks about €9,000 and an interest-free loan as an incentive for people with lower incomes to buy an electric car.

Conclusion

The alleged quote on the sharepic doesn't even exist. It is intended to give the impression that Hofreiter is speaking condescendingly about low-income earners, similar to Marie Antoinette's false quote : "If they don't have bread, let them eat cake."

In fact, the distorted quote is much more extensive and revolves around an incentive for people with low incomes to be able to afford an electric car in order to sensibly return the income from increased CO2 prices to citizens.

Also interesting:
Klaus-Dietmar is angry. He puts his “train top” (as he always calls it) aside. Because he just read on Facebook that the Greens are calling for a barbecue ban.
Mom, put the grill away, the Greens have banned grilling!
