Again and again, users stumble across supposed quotes from politicians - some of them are correct and some of them are not. So it's worth researching the Hofreiter case.
It's about a fairly new quote from Anton Hofreiter (Greens) that is circulating on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Some users immediately take the statement at face value and comment without being sure whether the quote is even true:

We cannot simply deport criminal refugees because what they do with us means they have to face consequences in their countries
It's hard to imagine that an intelligent person could make such a statement!
Has Germany become a trash can where rapists and criminals are harbored?
The fact check
There is no evidence that Anton Hofreiter, leader of the Green Party in the Bundestag, ever said that.
As the fact check portal Corrective and the dpa fact check confirm, there is neither a source nor evidence for this alleged quote. A spokesman for Hofreiter also denied the statement.

The quote cannot be found via Google or a press database . Hofreiter's photo can be found on the Münchner Abendzeitung website in an article from July 3, 2019 and was taken by Daniel von Loeper.
Conclusion
This is not the first time that fake quotes from politicians have circulated online or been taken out of context. We have a whole list of supposed statements. ( see here ) And that wasn't all of them.
Some people - such as Uwe Ostertag - deliberately create fake quotes and spread them on the Internet. But the Internet, even if many people might want to believe it, is not a legal vacuum. Ostertag had to answer for his memes and quotes and ended up in court .
