Shocking advertising in front of cartoons and Lego tutorials causes anger
YouTube has once again frightened numerous children because the commercial for the new horror film “Insidious: The Last Key” was shown in front of explicitly child-friendly clips. At least that's what the British media regulator Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) criticizes.
Horror of Disney films
Short advertising clips before videos have become the norm on YouTube, but parents are now accusing the video portal of not paying attention to which clips are shown before which video genre. So children now got frightening impressions from a new horror film.
The trailer for the scary film was shown before videos with songs from the Disney production "Frozen", instructions for building a Lego fire station and the cartoon "PJ Masks".
Sony Pictures and Sony's Columbia Pictures, which promoted the film via YouTube, told the ASA that they had excluded both unknown audiences and children from their advertising campaign options. Sony's tests also indicate that YouTube's content categorization algorithms are flawed.
YouTube, however, defends itself against the allegations and states that advertisers are responsible for their own campaigns. In addition, the ads could not be seen on the “YouTube Kids” website, which was specifically set up for children.
Bad attribution
“We considered the advert to be unsuitable for children because it was unduly frightening, shocking and likely to cause anxiety and distress,”
says the ASA. It also found that the advertising clips appeared before unrelated content, without warning, and could not be skipped for five seconds. The regulator has now recommended that Sony Pictures ensure future adverts are targeted more accordingly.
YouTube recently came under strong criticism because porn appeared in supposed playlists for children ( pressetext reported ) and these can still be played hidden on the video portal despite a strict ban ( pressetext reported ).
