In view of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, energy is being saved in every second German household: In a representative survey commissioned by the digital association Bitkom, almost half (48 percent) of people in Germany stated that they use energy more consciously - for example by using less electricity , heat less or have switched to green electricity.
The survey was conducted in March 2022. 16 percent 's energy consumption has changed significantly , 32 percent have made at least a slight change . Among younger people between the ages of 16 and 29, the tendency to save energy is somewhat more pronounced ( 52 percent ) than among other age groups (30-49 years: 48 percent ; 50-64 years: 49 percent ; ages 65 and over: 45 percent ).
Conversely, 47 percent also say that they have left everything as it was in this regard since the start of the war in Ukraine. “ The war in Ukraine has given many people additional motivation to save energy ,” says Bitkom board member Matthias Hartmann. “ Digital tools can be very helpful when it comes to saving energy, from smart meters to intelligent radiator thermostats to motion detectors for lighting. “
Smart devices play an important role
Smart devices play an important role among those who consciously save energy against the background of the war in Ukraine: 31 percent use WLAN or radio-controlled sockets to switch off devices completely when they are not in use or intelligent radiator thermostats (20 percent) as well as intelligent ones Meters for electricity, gas or water so that you can monitor your own consumption using a smartphone app (8 percent). The conscious use of electronic and digital devices is also increasing: 59 percent of those who want to save energy against the background of the war in Ukraine make sure that they avoid standby and always switch off their devices completely.
42 percent are increasingly activating the energy saving function on devices such as laptops or monitors. A fifth (22 percent) reduce the brightness of screens to save energy. “ Even small measures that do not restrict daily comfort can, overall, make an important contribution to protecting the climate and reducing dependence on Russian energy imports ,” emphasizes Hartmann.
This also includes traditional behaviors such as leaving the lights off more often, which 46 percent pay more attention to. 40 percent of those who are currently consciously reducing their energy consumption save hot water by taking a shower instead of bathing. And 38 percent use public transport or bicycles more often instead of cars. 22 percent turn down the heating more often.
9 out of 10 Germans (90 percent) are generally of the opinion that Germany must become independent of Russian gas as quickly as possible. 74 percent rate the pace of the energy transition as too slow - that is 3 percentage points more than at the beginning of 2022, when it was still 71 percent.
