Crizpy: Let's put social media where it's most fun.

Greenpeace divers explore a deep-sea paradise in the South Atlantic. But even here, almost 1,000 kilometers off the coast of South Africa on the Vema seamount, garbage lurks. More precisely: the fishing waste. For example, the divers find a lobster cage made of hard plastic.

According to a report by Greenpeace, around 640,000 tons of old fishing equipment end up in the oceans every year. This corresponds to the weight of more than 2,300 empty Airbus 380s and therefore accounts for around 10 percent of the plastic waste in the world's oceans. Environmentalists are sounding the alarm.

Pascal von Erp, diver: “The problem is big. We see it everywhere. Wherever there is a sea or an ocean and there is fishing, I find old fishing equipment while diving. When fishing equipment is lost, she keeps fishing. It's like a cycle of death. The fish is caught in the net or on the line, it dies and attracts other animals. Then they die too. It goes on and on. This is a waste of fish.”

According to the Greenpeace report, seamounts are particularly frequently affected because they are heavily fished because of their great biodiversity. The environmental organization is calling on the United Nations to adopt an ambitious, legally binding high seas protection treaty next year that will protect 30 percent of the oceans by 2030.
