Hubert Aiwanger and the Umbrella – A quick snapshot can tell a complete story, or rather, a completely false story. You often hear that a picture is worth a thousand words, but what happens when the words it says aren't the truth? A recently circulating image, which has also appeared in many media outlets, of Bavarian politician Hubert Aiwanger and his wife in the rain appears to do exactly that.

Who is Hubert Aiwanger?

Before we get into the story, a quick explanation of who Hubert Aiwanger is we are talking about. Hubert Aiwanger is a German politician, member (federal and Bavarian state chairman) of the Free Voters and deputy prime minister of Bavaria. He is known for his provocative posts on social media, particularly Twitter, where he often takes polarizing viewpoints.

The screenshot showing Aiwanger

Let us now turn to the snapshot in question. This screenshot shows Aiwanger and his wife in the heavy rain (see photo), he is holding an umbrella under which only he is standing and his wife is standing next to him in the rain. At first glance, it seems as if Aiwanger is being selfish and protecting himself while exposing his wife to the storm.

The importance of context

However, this image is just a snapshot. Full viewing of an associated video shows a completely different reality. In fact, the politician is not only seen under his umbrella, but he immediately and without any doubt tries to get his wife under the umbrella. The image of the selfish man is therefore nothing more than an illusion, caused by a random moment taken out of context.

More specifically, the excerpt comes from a video from the Tagesschau. This was recorded in Bayreuth in the context of the Richard Wagner Festival. The 2023 festival will take place from July to August 28th.

The dangers of interpretation

This incident brings to the table the thorny issue of interpreting images and videos. It is always important to consider the full context, especially on social media where snapshots and still images can easily be manipulated and taken out of context to promote false narratives.

Interestingly, many people from politics and the media also published this incorrect representation on Twitter, further amplifying the impact of the misinterpretation. Whether people from other political parties or accounts that are fundamentally critical of Aiwanger, many have spread the image.

Withdrawal and Apology: A Subsequent Correction

The power of images and videos is enormous, but the power of truth should be stronger. As the context of the image became known and the misinterpretation was exposed, most of these political and media figures retracted their posts. In an act of accountability and transparency, they have publicly apologized for spreading the misrepresentation. This highlights the importance of verifying information before sharing it.

Yes, the old saying “don’t believe everything you see” applies here too. A screenshot, a still image or a snapshot can tell a story, but it is our duty to make sure it is the real story. It is essential to always see the bigger picture and review the maximum amount of video or image material available on a situation in order to make an accurate and fair assessment.
