Topics involving animals and children often offer great potential for discussion on social media. Heated debates can arise that are not always objective.

The most important thing about the dog shot on the A29 in brief:

  • On February 6th A police officer had to shoot a dog on a highway
  • Allegations to the police on social media
  • Police respond to allegations

In this current case, too, there are a lot of emotions in the discussion. What happened: A dog was shot on the highway. We're not talking about anesthesia here, but live ammunition. There is a corresponding video in the NDR reporting ( here )

The police are confronted with many allegations on social media, which is why the Oldenburg police have published a corresponding post on Facebook (here). In it you read:

As many of you may have already noticed: Today, after several hours of work, our colleagues unfortunately had to shoot a dog that kept running onto Autobahn 29.

Next in the post:

As many of us are dog owners ourselves, we can assure you that we are very upset that there was no other option in the end. Despite several attempts, the dog could not be lured, scared away or caught with a snare. Even an attempt with a tranquilizer gun failed, although he was hit.

Despite the closure of the motorway, it could not be ruled out that the animal could have caused a serious accident. Please understand this.
No police officer likes to do something like that and we are truly sorry for the dog.

Press report on dog shot on A29

In addition to the personal posting on Facebook, there is of course also a press report about the situation. The following information can be found in this report:

On February 6th, 2020, at 8:24 a.m., a road user reported a dog running loose on the A29 between the Rastede and Jaderberg junctions. The mixed-breed dog ran on the Wilhelmshaven road in the direction of Rastede and this caused significant traffic disruptions. Due to this, the A29 had to be completely closed at the Rastede junction from around 10:00 a.m.

Several attempts to catch the dog using a dog sling failed. In the meantime, the dog changed lanes, so that the direction of Osnabrück was also affected and was completely closed for around 25 minutes. A specialist then tried to sedate the dog using a special tranquilizer gun. The dog was hit, but the anesthetic effect did not take effect, presumably because of the high adrenaline level.

Ultimately, the dog had to be shot at with the official submachine gun and it was fatally shot. Traffic was then reopened. Attempts are now being made to identify the animal owner.
