Why is hydraulic balancing useful?
“In many heating systems, the heating water is distributed unevenly. Some radiators become warmer than necessary, others not warm enough.”
Joshua Jahn from the Brandenburg Consumer Center
Hydraulic balancing ensures that the right amount of water can flow through all radiators. The water in the heating system always looks for the path with the least resistance. This means that water flows through short and thick heating pipes rather than through long and thin heating pipes. This can mean that rooms that are further away from the boiler do not receive enough heating water. This is particularly a problem on the upper floors of apartment buildings and ensures that the heating there does not get properly warm.
Hydraulic balancing regulates radiator valves
“In such cases, we recommend hydraulic balancing,” explains Joshua Jahn. The specialist from a heating construction company regulates the system by presetting the radiator valves so that only the necessary amounts of heating water reach each radiator and this heats all rooms evenly. If there are no pre-adjustable radiator valves yet, replacement is necessary. The tradesman should also take this opportunity to check whether a modern, high-efficiency pump is already available. Such a pump saves up to 80 percent of electricity compared to older, often oversized models.
This is important to take into account
“It is important that the company you commissioned gives you the complete calculation documents afterwards.”
Joshua Jahn
These contain documentation of the heat output for each radiator and the respective valve settings as well as information on setting the flow temperature and the pump.
Costs and funding for heating optimization
The costs for a hydraulic balancing depend on whether and which components the heating construction company has to replace and are on average between 500 and 1,000 euros. As part of the “Federal Promotion of Efficient Buildings” program, homeowners can apply for a subsidy of 20% for the measure. You must submit the funding application before concluding the contract to carry out the measures.
Free online lecture on heating optimization on September 7th
For anyone interested, the Brandenburg Consumer Center is offering an online lecture on the topic of heating optimization on September 7th and October 26th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. There you can find out what savings potential lies dormant in heating systems and what other options there are for optimization.
Get independent advice
If they have any questions about heating technology or other energy saving issues, consumers can receive support from the energy advisors at the consumer advice center. Anyone interested can make an appointment for a free telephone or video consultation at 0331 – 98 22 999 5 (Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Further information is available here.
About the energy advice from the consumer advice center
The consumer advice center's energy advice service offers the largest independent range of advice on the subject of energy in Germany. Since 1978, it has been supporting private consumers towards an energy-conscious future with currently over 700 energy consultants and at more than 900 locations. Every year, more than 150,000 households receive independent and neutral advice on all energy topics, such as energy saving, thermal insulation, modern heating technology and renewable energies. The energy efficiency measures brought about by a year's worth of consultations lead to energy savings equivalent to a freight train over 100 km long full of hard coal.
About the Consumer Center Brandenburg eV
The Brandenburg Consumer Center (VZB) is the most important representation of the interests of Brandenburg consumers towards business and politics.
It offers independent consumer advice, information and education on numerous topics: market & law, travel & leisure, finance & insurance, food & nutrition, digital & telecommunications, energy, building & living. She also advises on German-Polish consumer law. In addition, the VZB warns companies that violate applicable law to the detriment of consumers and educates the public about consumer rights, rip-off scams and savings tips.
