The digital world is full of opportunities, but also full of challenges - one of which is identity theft. In this ever-changing landscape, X (formerly Twitter) is faced with fraudulent identity claims. Here Elon Musk, the visionary behind X, is sending a clear signal for change and control with identity verification. Musk, who took the helm last year, took a bold step in his first days in office: He scrapped the established verification system that once featured the famous blue tick and instead introduced an $8 payment for the coveted symbol a.

This access to verification allowed anyone to get “verified” in an instant, reports derstandard , which promptly led to a rise in fraudulent profiles posing as companies or politicians. Today, as the shadow of abuse continues to grow, Musk is determined to take back control - this time with a novel approach.

Mastering chaos: identity verification and the new verification system at X

recent reports from Engadget , X is currently working on a groundbreaking verification system to “prevent imitations.” Instead of a simple blue tick, users should now upload an official ID and a selfie to gain access to a new identity feature.

This innovation was revealed by a screenshot from app researcher Nima Owji, who has discovered unreleased features of X in the past. He noticed an “ID verified” sign on Elon Musk’s profile. He later came across an unpublished guide that walks through the new identity verification process.

The entire identity verification process only takes five minutes and the collected data is stored for 30 days.

X NEWS DAILY writes on X

“NOTE: ID verification is *optional*. This will be an additional way for verified (premium) users to prove their identity, the same process Twitter 1.0 had for many years. Many users assume this will be mandatory for all accounts, even though this is not the case.”

Partner with Identity Intelligence for greater security

The unveiling of the new verification system sheds light on the partnership between X and the identity intelligence company Au10tix. According to the information, X will “store ID images including biometric data for up to 30 days” and use the collected information to improve security.

Verification for Organizations: A Costly Protection

To further strengthen protection against fraud, Musk has also introduced a new verification system for organizations to identify “real” companies, authorities, associations and NGOs. But this protection comes at a price: at least $1,000 per month and an additional $50 per month for each additional partner account are required. These costs can be challenging for nonprofits. Even the New York City Transit Authority was hit with a hefty fee of $50,000 to operate as a verified organization on X.

More transparency for premium subscribers

Previously, an X Premium subscription was enough to receive increased visibility and verification. But now X also makes it possible to hide who prefer discretion. This allows premium users to hide their financial connection to the platform.

Conclusion: Verification for more security and trust

Elon Musk has recognized the challenges of identity theft and fraud at X and is making clear signals for change. The overhaul of the verification system, the introduction of identity proof and the partnership with Au10tix show Musk's determination to control the chaos and create a safer environment for all users of X.

While change is often met with resistance, all indications are that X is on its way to restoring the integrity of the platform and ushering in a new era of security and trust. By overhauling the identity verification system in such an innovative way, Musk is not only creating a stronger defense against identity theft, but also a foundation for sustainable growth and seamless interaction on the platform. X users can now hope to engage in an environment where their identity is protected and they can focus on the experience they care about.
