Massive criticism of human rights violations surrounding the World Cup
The soccer World Cup, which will be held this year in the Gulf state of Qatar, kicks off on November 20th. Like every World Cup, this top football event will be widely covered by the media.
But there is also massive criticism because of the human rights violations surrounding the World Cup
GambleBase.com is also addressing this issue and is launching an unusual competition: the creators of the portal are giving away 5,000 euros to a person who does not follow the World Cup matches and instead writes an essay about human rights and their importance.
Films instead of football
“ 5,000 euros if you don’t watch the World Cup! “ – This is how the GambleBase.com team promotes its competition. Anyone aged 18 or over who is prepared to take on a very special task can apply: The winner, drawn at random, has the job of watching specified films on the subject of human rights instead of the 2022 World Cup games and then writing an essay about them to write. GambleBase.com then even publishes this contribution from the obviously anonymous winner on its website. The winner receives 5,000 euros for their commitment.
How did the founders of GambleBase.com come up with this special competition idea? “We would like to draw attention to the poor working conditions on the World Cup construction sites,” says Timo Weber about the motives for the campaign. The rights of women and queer people also need to be improved, emphasizes the boss of GambleBase.com. In addition to all of this, there are allegations of irregularities surrounding FIFA's awarding of this World Cup to Qatar. The aim of GambleBase.com's campaign is to spark a social discourse that critically addresses the general conditions of the 2022 World Cup.
No blanket criticism of Qatar
Despite all the criticism, the GambleBase.com team makes it unmistakably clear that this is not directed against the country of Qatar itself. “We especially love sport and football,” emphasizes Timo Weber. The popular sport on the green grass connects people worldwide. In principle, we are also pleased that the World Cup is an important milestone as the first major sporting event for the entire Arab and Muslim world. However, it is also the opinion that no person should lose their life for the pleasure of other people.
Hatred and incitement don't help
Neither the concealment of the grievances by celebrating football fans and relevant media nor hateful comments against Qatar are the solution, which is why GambleBase.com would like to initiate constructive discussions. The competition is intended to make a relevant contribution to this.
The campaign starts with applications from people aged 18 and over who want to take a stand against human rights violations through their own commitment. The lucky winner will be drawn at random by GambleBase.com. Now comes the job that the person selected has to complete in order to receive the 5,000 euros in prize money.
GambleBase.com has selected the four-part documentary “World Cup of Shame” and the documentary “Taste Of Cement” for the campaign. Instead of watching the World Cup games, the winner of the campaign has the task of watching these documentaries and writing an essay. This must contain at least one DIN A4 sheet and address why human rights are so fundamentally important in the author's opinion. The reward for the commitment is the 5,000 euros and the publication of the work on GambleBase.com.
Conditions of participation and deadlines for the campaign
The competition is open to people aged 18 and over who are registered in Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
To participate in the GambleBase.com competition, a television or computer with an internet connection is required. Automated participation, multiple participation and, of course, participation with fake identities or with the identities of third parties are not permitted. The GambleBase.com campaign starts on November 17th, 2022, the end of the application deadline for participants is November 24th, 2022 at 4 p.m. The participant who is determined by lottery will be notified of their luck by email on December 2nd, 2022 and must complete the task completely between December 2nd, 2022 (5 p.m.) and December 16th, 2022 (7 p.m.). The finished article is placed online through the portal. This means other GambleBase.com users can also read the article and form their own opinion on the important topic.
Your own opinion counts
The GambleBase.com team wants to use the campaign to stimulate reflection and social discourse. Is it okay to organize exuberant public viewings if the fun was made possible by the dubious awarding of the World Cup host and then by the worst conditions for the workers? These and other questions are intended to be raised by GambleBase.com's campaign.
But the portal wants to achieve even more through the competition. “We would also like to use our competition to encourage people to support humanitarian projects instead of spending money on jerseys or World Cup-related merchandising items,” summarizes Timo Weber. Everyone can make a contribution to denounce the grievances. Discussions with friends and relatives, information on portals such as Amnesty International, sharing knowledge and donating money are options for taking action against the circumstances surrounding the Qatar World Cup.
Fairness – even outside of football
The GambleBase.com competition has a mission - and that is that rules of fair treatment apply not only to the game on the green lawn, but also to the encounters outside of it. Regardless of nation, gender, religion and sexual orientation, friendly, fair and legal cooperation should be maintained. That's why the World Cup shouldn't just be about storms of celebration.
Incidentally, fairness and legality are values that GambleBase.com addresses in its current competition for good reason. The portal, which offers a platform for a wide range of gambling-related topics, is one of the first and few portals of its kind in Germany to report exclusively on legal gambling. This helps combat the flourishing black market and improves both player protection and addiction prevention.
