It is being spread on Telegram that the Swedish furniture store should close its branches in Germany. But there are no reports in serious media. – This is the request that reached our reporting form
Why should IKEA close stores?
Unfortunately, since we did not receive any screenshots or links to the request, we can only speculate a little about the basis for this claim.
The recommendation from the ZGV medium-sized business association, which was published on September 14th, could be behind this.
“Green Monday” for furniture and kitchen retailers
The ZGV responded to the energy crisis with a somewhat unusual measure. Furniture and kitchen stores that are members of the ZGV should introduce a “Green Monday” between November 2022 and March 2023. In this recommendation, “Green Monday” simply means that shops should remain closed.
“By shutting down the heating and electricity systems in stationary retail from Saturday evening to Tuesday morning, the corresponding savings potential is to be increased,” says the ZGV press release .
Because “furniture and kitchen retailers in particular have to react to the exploding energy costs,” explained Dr. Marc Zgaga, managing director of “The Mittelstandsverbund” and spokesman for the furniture and kitchen specialist group.
IKEA is taking its own measures
The company would like to implement its own ideas when it comes to sustainability, as a spokesman explained to the FAZ .
Gas heating in the business premises should be replaced by heat pumps, photovoltaic systems should be installed on the roofs, and escalators should only be used when necessary. What the Swedish furniture store does not include is closing one day a week. According to the FAZ, other furniture stores are also not enthusiastic about the ZGV's proposal.
So it's just a rumor. IKEA is not closing any branches in Germany.
