The claim

A notice at IKEA appears to be a request to wear a protective mask there since October 1st.

Our conclusion

This is an internal notice that applies to employees, not customers.

new Corona rules since October 1st , according to which federal states are now allowed to set stricter rules themselves.
However, according to relevant circles, IKEA itself is said to have introduced a strict rule: there should be a mask requirement in all branches. The photographed notice is real, but it is not public!

The notice at IKEA

This photo, about which mask opponents are upset, is circulating on social media:

The notice at IKEA

The heading of the notice (which is not actually posted, but appears to be on a piece of paper attached to a whiteboard) is “ Masks required in all IKEA stores .” A red arrow points to the sentence “ This also applies in the event that a medical certificate is available ”, which of course particularly upsets those who probably bought such a certificate for a lot of money *wink wink*.

Take a close look!

Two points on the notice indicate that the notice is not intended for customers:

  • “In customer discussions”
  • “You can get your medical mouth and nose protection at the telephone switchboard”

While “customer conversation” is still debatable (does this perhaps mean the conversation with me, the customer, with a salesperson?), the reference to the telephone exchange is clearer, as customers have no access there.

Even on Telegram there is doubt

To be fair, it must also be pointed out that even on Telegram not everyone believes that the notice applies to customers, because some went to IKEA in person and did not have to wear a protective mask there:

Doubts on Telegram too
Doubts on Telegram too

The furniture store's homepage (see HERE ) only recommends wearing a protective mask voluntarily, but it is not mandatory.

We wrote to IKEA

But to be absolutely sure (because perhaps not all branches have implemented it yet, and the homepage hasn't been updated yet), we asked IKEA directly and got the following answer:

"Thank you for your inquiry.

You guessed that correctly, the notice is internal employee information about new regulations from October 1st, 2022.

An updated workplace regulation has been in force since October 1st, 2022.

This stipulates that employees must always wear mouth and nose protection if the minimum distance of 1.5 meters from customers and colleagues cannot be maintained. The new regulations currently do not provide any restrictions for customers who visit our furniture stores. However, we still recommend adhering to the well-known hygiene and distance rules.”

Conclusion

The notice was apparently photographed and distributed by an IKEA employee, as the regulation only applies to employees. However, the use of a protective mask is still voluntary for customers, but is recommended.

Also interesting: Nothing against you, dear colleagues from the Postillon.
We love you, honestly! But unfortunately you probably have to make your satire even clearer than it already is, because people really believe that Chancellor Scholz was present at a beheading! – Scholz attends beheading? Postillon article is being misused!
