A 70-year-old man fell victim to a fake Microsoft employee. While the man was working on his computer, an alert appeared on the screen with a phone number and a request to contact MS Support because there was a problem with the computer.
The 70-year-old then contacted the number provided by telephone. In the following phone call, the alleged Microsoft employee used clever conversation to persuade the man to buy a Google Play card worth two thousand euros. In good faith that the computer could then be unlocked again, the 70-year-old then purchased two of the required payment cards, each worth several hundred euros, from a supermarket and a kiosk.
When the fraudster called the man back shortly afterwards, the senior told him the codes for the Google Play cards over the phone. It was only afterwards that the 70-year-old realized that he had fallen victim to a telephone scammer.
The police advise:
Reputable companies like Microsoft do not contact their customers without being asked. If a service employee contacts you without you asking: simply hang up the phone! Under no circumstances should you give out private information, such as bank account or credit card details or access details for customer accounts (e.g. Paypal). Never give an unknown caller access to your computer, for example by installing remote maintenance software.
