Officially, 29% of Germans have now tested positive for the coronavirus using a PCR test. Conversely, this means that 71% have never been infected. At the same time, the Robert Koch Institute assumes that the number of unreported cases is significantly higher and estimates that one in two people have already carried the virus. Doc Fischer editor Tine Seidemann wants to find out whether this also applies to her and has a blood test done.
How contagious is Corona?
Yes, Corona is contagious. But not every contact with an infected person is contagious. English scientists exposed 34 unvaccinated volunteers to the SARS-Cov-2 virus. The result: “Only” 18 of the 34 test subjects became infected. How can that be?
A cold helps
SARS-Cov-2 is not the only coronavirus. Furthermore, Prof. Alexandra Trkola, virologist at the University of Zurich, and her team have discovered that four of our most common cold viruses also belong to the coronavirus family. Anyone who already has antibodies that ward off a cold, for example, forms “cross immunity” and is therefore less likely to get SARS-Cov-2.
What else helps?
People with blood groups A, B and AB are slightly more likely to become infected with corona than people with blood group 0.
However, this effect is relatively small, which is why an infection should not be considered impossible even with blood group 0. In addition to antibodies, T cells play a larger role in protection against corona.
They recognize foreign structures and kill them. Although they cannot prevent an infection, they can significantly mitigate the course. However, a complete vaccination offers the best protection.
I have now received my results from the laboratory. The nucleic protein test is negative. So I'm not one of the unreported cases, but I'm one of the people who are more likely to become infected due to genetic makeup. And yet I will probably get infected at some point.
