Be careful with promises of winnings over the phone. It is a scam that leads to a trap.

As the Mainz police reported, a 75-year-old received a call from an alleged employee of a debt collection company who made promises of winnings. This states that he took part in a competition.

Before he receives his winnings, he should transfer a medium, double-digit amount. The 75-year-old denies taking part in a competition and ends the conversation.

Four days later, the alleged debt collection company contacted us again. This time the 75-year-old wife takes the call. Here, too, the caller told her that she had won a competition. She replies that she wants to clarify this with a lawyer first. The caller then hangs up.

Note: “You won!” Who isn’t happy to hear that? But anyone who receives such a message, by telephone, email or post, should be careful. This is often a devious scam with a false promise of profit.

The promise of supposedly high profits is a scam that fraudsters use in a wide variety of variations.

The method is always the same:

Before a prize is handed over, victims are asked to provide something in return, for example to pay “fees”, to call a paid hotline or to take part in events where inferior goods are offered at inflated prices.
