According to current data analysis, lonely singles use fewer colors in social networks

People who feel lonely in their personal lives tend to post less colorful pictures on Instagram. Your preferred filters weaken bright colors or completely immerse photos in grayscale.

This is the conclusion of a recent study by researchers at Sungkyunkwan University . A lot can be learned about the emotional world from the individual user gallery.

Lots of personality details

In the study, the researchers looked at the Instagram accounts of 179 participants. Their analysis included 25,394 photos to understand how these users used colors in their previously published photos.

The participating students were also given an online questionnaire to evaluate their personality traits and life satisfaction.

The researchers assessed five personality traits: narcissism, life satisfaction, feelings of loneliness, attitude towards Instagram and gender.

The photos found on the accounts were analyzed for overall use of color, diversity and harmony. The results show that users who were categorized as romantic had uploaded significantly more colored images to their accounts than others.

Those who often felt lonely according to the questionnaire used colors very sparingly. Users' positive attitude towards Instagram and the color harmony of their images were also positively correlated.

Self-expression and color preference

“Instagram photo color characteristics are linked to the uploader’s characteristics. The present study contributes to research on color preference and self-presentation on the Internet,”

said the study authors. The colors of the photos also differed between the users' genders.

The women's accounts analyzed in the study tended to show colorful and varied images, while men tended to post harmonious images on Instagram.
