- From the end of June, Germany will introduce the Family section on Instagram - a new central place where parents can get an overview of their teenagers' accounts and supervise and support them using our tools.
- There are new supervision tools on Instagram worldwide: Parental supervision can be started by both parents and teenagers themselves directly in the Instagram app and ended at any time.
- A new feature is being added to help teens better manage their time on Instagram. For example, with new tips and reminders to use the time limits function.
Digital reality is becoming more and more interesting for teenagers. But their parents often face this “online world” with many question marks. Meta would like to support you in this challenge and are therefore introducing new functions and resources around the virtual world and Instagram.
Meta is launching a new family area that will be available in Germany from the end of June. The Family Space is a new central location that offers parents and guardians extensive opportunities to supervise their children between the ages of 13 and 18 when using Instagram. This is how Meta helps parents discuss digital reality with their teenagers.
This is just a start, based on careful collaboration with industry experts. Meta will continue to expand its parental supervision tools over time.
Advanced parental supervision features on Instagram
Here is an overview of the new functions on Instagram for parents and guardians:
- Setup: Parental supervision can be started and ended at any time by both parents and teenagers themselves directly in the Instagram app.
- Manage time: Parents can set daily time limits or breaks. During this time, the teenagers will no longer have access to Instagram on that day.
- Report content and accounts: Teens can choose the option directly in the app to inform their legal guardians directly if they report an account for violations of the Instagram Community Guidelines.
- Stay up to date: Parents find out in a weekly report when the teenager follows new accounts or new followers are added.
In the USA, parents have been able to set up such supervision tools since March 2022. Starting this month, these tools will be rolled out in Germany as well as other countries such as Great Britain, Japan, Australia, Ireland, Canada and France. It should be available worldwide by the end of the year. Further information can be found in the family section .

A good time for teens on Instagram
Parents can see how much time their teen spends on Instagram and set a daily time limit per device . When this is almost reached, Instagram notifies the teenager that it is time to close the app. The teenager can only use the app again as soon as the set time limit allows it. It is also possible to set specific breaks during the day or week during which Instagram should not be used.

Expert-backed resources
The family area offers a media literacy hub where resources from experts are available. These help parents or guardians to talk to their children about safe internet use. These are, for example, helpful articles or videos and tips that provide suggestions for conversations with young people via social media.
Meta adds new articles to the Media Literacy Hub from organizations such as ParentZone, Media Smarts, National Association for Media Literacy Education and Cyberbullying Research Center. These articles provide parents with helpful tips on how to talk to teenagers about various online topics, such as: B. how to network safely with others and how to perceive yourself better online . Meta will continue to work with experts and organizations to provide even more resources for parents and guardians. Meta is also adding a new privacy page with more information for teens about privacy settings, defaults, and features on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger.
How Meta creates safe experiences and products for teens
To develop products and experiences that contribute to the safety of young people, Meta works directly with teenagers, parents, guardians and experts. In recent years, Meta has incorporated best practices from the United Nations (UN), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and children's rights groups.
Meta presents an internal process that Meta has developed to take the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into account in our product development. The Convention emphasizes that the “best interests of the child” should guide the development of services, products and experiences for young people. Our process guides our teams in how to apply this standard when developing digital experiences for people under 18 using our technologies.
