Ban on Instagram posts, comics and films that indicate self-harming behavior.

Instagram bans all content that shows self-harm and suicide. This also includes comics, memes and film clips. Such content will either be removed completely or, in milder cases, will be blurred or given a warning. With this measure, Instagram wants to prevent a harmful influence on the psychological state of the social media platform's users.

Reference to aid organizations

Nothing is more important to me than the safety of the people who use Instagram, particularly the most vulnerable. Suicide and self-harm are difficult and complex topics that people understandably care deeply about.

[…]

We will no longer allow fictional depictions of self-harm or suicide on Instagram, such as drawings or memes or content from films or comics that use graphic imagery.

“We do not allow fictional depictions of self-harm and suicide on Instagram. We will also remove content that does not directly show self-harming acts but alludes to such acts. “We want to focus more on users who are looking for this kind of content and direct them to organizations that can help them,” says CEO Adam Mosseri in a blog post ( here ).

According to Mosseri, in the past three months, Instagram has deleted, blurred or added warnings to 834,000 images, videos or text content related to suicide or self-harm. The company found 77 percent of this content itself. Mosseri's goal is to completely ban this content from the platform.

Instagram: pressure from the British government

Back in 2016, Instagram introduced a function that allows users to report if the behavior of friends indicates a possible risk of suicide. Insta then contacts the relevant user and offers them to speak to friends or a relief organization, or gives advice themselves.

In 2017, British schoolgirl Molly Russel committed suicide at the age of 14 after seeing self-harm-related content on Instagram. The British government has therefore long been calling on social networks to be more responsible for content that is related to suicide.
