Having a car accident is bad enough, but with a hybrid or electric car it can mean insurance problems. The SWR describes what happened:
At the end of July 2021, a car belonging to Eugen Gross's shipping company crashes into a bridge pillar. The car is a hybrid car with a high-voltage battery. Such batteries are particularly dangerous in electric cars as they can potentially ignite days after the accident. Therefore, for safety reasons, the car is stored and covered in the towing company's yard.
Insurance doesn't pay
The hybrid was on the farm for a total of seven weeks. The towing and storage costs amount to over 17,000 euros. The car is insured by Allianz. In the case of Eugen Gross, this only wants to cover half of the costs, as according to the insurance policy, demurrage fees are paid for a maximum of 14 days. The problem: There are no legal regulations!
SWR Marktcheck met Michael Dzakovic, managing director of the Association of Salvage and Towing Companies in Germany. He explains that there are no legal regulations for such a so-called quarantine period for a high-voltage vehicle and that it is standard practice in the industry to follow the manufacturer's specifications. These usually specify between three to ten days as the quarantine period. The towing company hired in our case states that the arrangements were made in consultation with the manufacturer and the fire department. However, our research revealed that neither happened.
Storage of the accident cars
In addition to the long downtimes, the type of storage is often a problem with accident-prone cars, as many companies neither have the space nor the necessary equipment. In addition, quarantine areas must be approved by the district office. There are also special procedures for minimizing downtime, for example. Here the vehicles are checked by a technician after around five days, the battery is then removed and stored in special boxes so that they can be transported safely. In Germany, however, hardly any company invests in such a process. Correspondingly important: When it comes to insurance, make sure that the car insurance also covers follow-up costs such as longer quarantine periods or battery disposal!
