According to a survey by the political research institute CSDS in collaboration with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, a good third of Indians are in favor of switching off the Internet if it appears necessary to maintain law and order. A significant number of respondents are also open to monitoring the Internet and its users.
36 percent support the shutdown when it comes to law and order, while 26 percent think it is wrong and 38 percent have no opinion.
Regulate social media content
34 percent of respondents believe that the Indian government monitors what people do on their cell phones or online. 14 percent say this is not the case and 52 percent have no opinion. 28 percent are in favor of the government regulating social media content, 33 percent are against and 39 percent are abstaining.
The survey suggests that more than half of internet users are concerned about fake news and the same number of social media users "admit to having been misled by fake news or information online at some point," it said the evaluation of the survey.
Consent to monitoring
“We conducted a systematic sampling, both in rural and urban India, to get an idea of what Indians' true opinion is about the media. Opinions on government surveillance are divided, but when it comes to security, which has become an issue for Indians, support for surveillance measures is significant.”
