Bilbao (pte003/12.07.2013/06:15) – A new program is able to pose as a female teenager on the Internet in order to locate pedophile offenders.
The “Negobot”, programmed by Spanish developers, conducts lifelike online conversations and is intended to simulate a real person. A Spanish police unit is already examining the use of the undercover program.
It is intended to protect teenagers from possible sexual assaults initiated over the Internet. The so-called chatbot is initially being used in forums where pedophile users are suspected. The program initially engages in general discussions rather passively. If approaches are made, Negobot changes its behavior and the “target” is lured into the trap.
Authenticity through game theory
To make the program's behavior more convincing, the scientists used “game theory.” This is a mathematical decision-making system that takes the behavior of the other person into account. Negobot has different personalities and can represent seven different types in its conversations. Additional details, such as intentional typos and language errors as well as abbreviations common in youth language, are also intended to portray a female teenager more authentically.
Use in social networks
According to Carlos Laorden from the University of Deusto http://deusto.es , one of the developers of Negobot, programs of this type, so-called “chatbots”, usually exhibit very predictable behavior. Game theory expands the possibilities and allows the program to guide conversations rather than just react. It is even capable of resuming interrupted and separated conversations.
Negobot has already been tested on Google's chat service and can also be translated into other languages. In the long term, implementation in social networks such as Facebook would be entirely conceivable, says Laorden. However, the scientist emphasizes that despite the program's high level of development, communication skills are still subject to major limitations. So it is not possible for Negobot to recognize irony (press release reported: http://pte/news/20130708001 ).
