The images from Ukraine mostly show footage of the destruction. Nothing remains of numerous towns and streets. Some buildings are now only in ruins. Mariupol shows the extent of the destruction in its extreme form. Actually, the sensitive data network of the Internet should also have been destroyed. However, that is not the case. The internet still works surprisingly well in Ukraine.
Emile Aben from the Internet management organization RIPE Network Coordination Center (NCC) investigated this and presented his results at the RIPE 84 conference , which took place in Berlin from May 16 to 20, 2022.
That's why the Internet works in Ukraine
Emile Aben's findings show that the network in Ukraine has suffered damage, but not to the extent one would expect. Cities like Mariupol are excluded, because the internet infrastructure here was also destroyed by the serious Russian attacks. Basically, according to Emile Aben, it can be said that, compared to the start of the war, around 85 percent of networked devices register on the web. The reason for the decline could be the destruction of the network infrastructure, but also the fact that many people had to leave Ukraine and therefore their homes and jobs and the devices no longer start.
Ukrainian Internet is surprisingly resilient.
However, the Ukrainian internet is surprisingly resilient to individual outages like those in Mariupol. The main reason for this is the number of providers. There are a large number of smaller providers in Ukraine. The strength of the Internet lies in the strategy: many small providers are better than a few large ones. There is almost no market concentration with the provider. If one of the small providers fails, there are always others who can minimize the damage.
A report from Golem states:
“In addition, Ukraine has a total of 19 Internet Exchange Points (IXP), said Aben. Nobody is of central importance or dominant. The backbone paths for the fiber optic connections to each other and in the respective networks are themselves very diverse. Due to this structure with many redundancies, individual, mostly local failures are often not particularly serious. “

Self-help
The well-functioning self-help on site also ensures a stable internet. Network technicians were there immediately and reestablished a connection very quickly. Support is also available from the Global NOG Alliance . There are also numerous technology donations and a swap website. More about this HERE
Providers from other countries can donate needed devices. The Alliance will then take over coordination and logistics in Ukraine. Futurezone reports that splicers for fiber optic connections are particularly in demand and the Alliance has also launched a donation page for this purpose. HERE
And Elon Musk?
Why the Internet in Ukraine still works so well despite the Russian attacks also has something to do with Elon Musk. As is known, the Tesla and Space X CEO's “Starlink” satellite system supplies Ukraine with internet from space. (We reported HERE and HERE . On Twitter on March 3, 2022, Musk himself claimed that Starlink was the only communication system that worked in some parts of Ukraine.

However, Emile Aben's analysis shows that Musk does not play a measurable role. However, there are isolated examples in which satellite internet was able to maintain contact with the outside world - such as in Mariupol.
