If he doesn't follow the instructions, an intimate video that was previously secretly recorded in a video chat would be published. After the young man had transferred the required three-digit amount, the recording of the video chat was published on various internet platforms.

“Sextortion” is a form of crime in which the victim is threatened with publishing nude photos or videos.

As in the current case, the perpetrators' approach is quite simple and devious.

After the fraudsters have contacted the later victims via social platforms, they are asked to move the conversation to a video chat. The communication becomes more and more intimate until the victim is finally asked by the supposedly attractive chat partner to take off his clothes and perform sexual acts on himself. If the victim complies with the requests, the video chat is promptly terminated. This is followed by a threat to publish the video online if the requested amount of money is not paid.

Recommendations on how you can protect yourself from this type of crime:

  • Don't agree to a video chat too quickly.
  • If in doubt: first tape off the chat camera so that you can only communicate verbally and observe what is happening.
  • Do not consent to exposure or intimate acts in video chats if you have only known the person for a short time.

If you have already been a victim of sextortion, the police recommend the following:

  • Do not transfer money. The blackmail usually doesn't stop after the payment.
  • Report it to the police.
  • Contact the site operator and request that the images be deleted. Inappropriate content can be reported to the site operator using buttons specially set up for this purpose.
