A 20-year-old young man fell asleep on his smartphone and woke up with burns on his shoulder. Now he is considering suing Apple.
As reported on the EXPRESS website, 20-year-old André Nickel from Mauenheim fell asleep in bed using his smartphone and suffered burns and a cell phone-shaped scar on his shoulder.
His mother (45) confirmed to EXPRESS:
“I looked at my boy and was amazed. I had never seen anything like it. And there were two thick, black burn marks on André’s display.”
The young man was plagued by back pain when he got up and was really frightened:
“There were bloody holes in the shoulder. The corners of the phone were etched into the skin.”
According to spokesman Jürgen Arens (47) from the Cologne fire department, anyone who posts on social networks, chats or texts before falling asleep should never leave their smartphone in bed, but should always “place it on a non-flammable surface”.
“If heat builds up in electrical devices, it can lead to a technical defect, i.e. overheating and even a fire. Of course, this could also happen with smartphones.”
André Nickel is now considering taking legal action against Apple.
“It's unbelievable that an iPhone gets so hot that it burns you. Maybe I'll sue Apple."
André tells EXPRESS.
EXPRESS asked Apple for a statement on the incident. The headquarters said that in order to assess the case, they would have to be able to examine the device and pointed out that the device is designed for a maximum operating temperature of 35 degrees. A human's body temperature is around 37 degrees.
