“If this orange dot lights up on your iPhone, turn off your phone and seek help immediately. Because when this dot lights up, it means that someone is listening to you. If all your apps are closed and you’re not on a call, that means someone is listening in on you.”

Of course, such a report is unsettling. If you notice an orange dot on your iPhone, you'll want to know what's behind it. You could read the operating instructions or check Apple Support. – We’ve done that now.

Orange dot in the status bar

The orange dot indicates that the microphone is active. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that someone is listening in on you, but rather that an app is using your phone's microphone.

This can happen, for example, when you use Siri. After all, the voice assistant is always ready to answer your questions or information received via the microphone.

The display as a colored dot in the status bar was set up as a security measure so that you can always quickly see which activities are active. For example, a green dot indicates that the camera is being accessed.

Check via control center

If there is no app currently running that you think should have access to the microphone or camera, you can check in the control center which app is active here. Here you can see the respective name of the app with the corresponding icon for camera (green) or microphone (orange).

If another app accesses the hardware functions, which you may not agree with, check the permissions or close the app if it is not currently needed. If you are unsure what the app plans to do with the access: uninstall it.

Check about data protection & security

In the “Settings” – “Privacy & Security” menu you can check which apps have requested access to the camera or microphone. Here you simply tap on the corresponding hardware function and you will then see a list of all the apps that have access here. Here you can activate or deactivate this for each app.
