Criminals change your Apple ID password with just a few clicks

Gangs of thieves are particularly subtle and particularly target iPhone users. Criminals look very closely over iPhone users' shoulders to find out the lock code. Only when they know the code will they snatch the device. With the lock code you can change the Apple ID password in the settings with just a few clicks. We tried it: All you need is your lock code. You don't have to type in your old password either!

If your Apple ID password has been changed, you will no longer be able to access your data. Even a possible two-step authentication would not help here, as criminals can also view your emails and messages.

Block bank accounts and credit cards immediately

We recommend that you block your bank and credit cards immediately, especially if you have activated Apple Pay. This allows criminals to easily pay and cause high financial damage. Even if you don't use Apple Pay, you should block your cards because payment information may be stored on your device.

Access to data and apps

Remember: If strangers know your lock code, you can access all your apps. Social networks and email programs are particularly valuable for criminals. These can be used to rip off others on your behalf. Therefore, try to change your passwords as quickly as possible.

The advantage: Criminals usually cannot change their social media passwords so easily because the current password must be known.

Think of the screen code like your ATM card pin

  • Protect your cell phone code like your ATM card pin and do not share the code.
  • Use a complicated 6-digit code. Don't choose simple number sequences.
  • Do not enter the code in public. Use Face ID instead.
  • When entering the code, make sure no one is watching you and cover the device.

Prevent theft

  • Write down your IMEI number (you can find this either in the device information or by entering *#06#). The IMEI number can be used to uniquely identify your device as yours if it is found.
  • Have the numbers to block your SIM card, debit and credit cards ready.
  • Do not leave your cell phone open and always carry it close to your body.
  • Add additional protection to apps. With some apps you can set that an additional password entry is required. Please choose a different password!
  • Don't just back up your data on iCloud. Use e.g. B. also an external hard drive.

Here's what you can do if your iPhone is stolen

  • Try locking iCloud If criminals know your lock code and have changed your Apple ID password, this is not possible.
  • Block your debit and credit cards. Contact your bank or credit card company if the criminals have made payments. A chargeback may be possible.
  • Lock your SIM card.
  • Think about which apps and services you have on your cell phone and change passwords immediately. Particular caution is required if you have saved your passwords in iCloud Keychain.
  • File a police report. To do this, have the IMEI number (device serial number) ready.

Contact the Ombudsman Office for payment problems

In the case of unjustified credit card debits, as in this case, contacting the ombudsman's office for payment problems at the Ministry of Social Affairs may be helpful. Here you will find the relevant contact details for the ombudsman's office for payment problems .
