The claim
A BBC reporter is said to have only posed an acute danger in a report - at least some of the still photos are intended to give this impression.
Our conclusion
No, the BBC report by Jeremy Bowen from Irpin was not staged. The city's residents were fleeing Russian shelling at the time, which can also be heard in the original video. A woman who can be seen in the background of the post also ducks briefly. This excerpt was not used in the posts shared online.
war in Ukraine has been raging since the end of February and just a few weeks after the bombing began, Russian troops also attacked the Ukrainian city of Irpin, near the capital Kiev. BBC reporter Jeremy Bowen reported on BBC news program Live from the city amid numerous gunfire. There are currently several discussions and posts about whether Bowen only staged certain scenes from his post.

BBC reporter Bowen reports from Irpin
There are currently many images and screenshots circulating on social media, taken from a video report by the British television station BBC . In the latter, reporter Jeremy Bowen provides information about the current situation in the city of Irpin, which is under fire.
Bowen is wearing a helmet and protective vest with the inscription “Press” on it and is lying on the floor, looking into the camera, with his microphone in his hand. In the background you can see a woman with a medium-sized bag in her hand who seems to be wondering what is happening. The question therefore arises as to whether there was no immediate danger so that one would have had to lie down on the ground.
The claim
"A BBC reporter heroically reports 'from the trenches' while a stunned woman from a nearby 'trench' doesn't understand what's going on," reads a Facebook post that includes a screenshot from the report .
Other users online report an exaggerated portrayal of the situation; In some cases there is even talk of deception. There is also a joke about the situation in the video: Some speak of an “acting performance”, other users “believe” the woman was just coming from the market with her full shopping bags while the reporter was protecting himself from fire.
The facts
During the television report in which Jeremy Bowen reports on the current situation in Irpin, impacts can be heard again and again. You can also see numerous refugees carrying their belongings (suitcases, bags, stuffed animals but also real dogs and puppies) and making every attempt to escape towards Kiev.
A young family who, according to research, died in Irpin was also seen in the video. Like many other people, they were on their way across a bridge that led to Kiev. To protect themselves from air raids, many civilians also crouched next to or under the bridge.

This bridge is already known from many photographs and can be seen in the background of the reporter . He also mentioned that many civilians were present. He was in a scene on the outskirts of the city.

Photo without context – scene appears safe
The woman in the background of the video also took cover during the coverage, unlike what is seen in many screenshots. This is because at the end of the scene she looks in Bowes' direction and eventually stands up. At that moment, the photo clippings were taken from social media, making the whole scene look more harmless, according to the dpa in fact checking . The woman with the bags then turns away. Like the other cowering people, she appears to have been fleeing Irpin.
It can therefore be said that the photo lacks the context of the entire television report. It's just a section of the image in which the whole situation appears different than in the video. There you can also see how the woman and other people also took cover. So there was definitely a risk of lying on the ground.
In a Twitter post, the reporter himself commented on the allegations: “Insult me if you want. “Do not insult the thousands of civilians who are fleeing Russian shelling and war crimes across the Irpin Bridge in Kiev,” said Jeremy Bowen. The claim that he was pretending to do something during the operation is therefore false.
Conclusion
No, the BBC report by Jeremy Bowen from Irpin was not staged. The city's residents were fleeing Russian shelling at the time, which can also be heard in the original video. A woman who can be seen in the background of the post also ducks briefly. This excerpt was not used in the posts shared online.
