Ugly scenes are taking place at the border between Turkey and Greece - but not all of the pictures are real!
Turkey opened the border with Greece to migrants, Greece is resisting this, conflicts are inevitable. In this situation, some users heat up the mood even more by sharing alleged pictures of the current situation, but unfortunately there are also pictures that have nothing to do with it.
As is the case in crisis situations: an information war often takes place. A striking number of Turkish accounts share these images in order to build moral pressure on Greece and the EU. We by no means doubt that there are riots at the border, but is it really necessary to spread false images at the same time?

The bleeding man

The image is a screenshot from a video from 2015 and shows riots on the Serbian/Hungarian border.

The crying woman

The picture is mostly on Twitter in this context. It was taken on February 3, 2020 during riots outside a refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos.
also be seen in a YouTube video from February 4th

The other pictures
The colleagues from “ Correctiv ” also looked at the pictures.
For example, the picture of the two men in front of the border crossing (top right in the Facebook post above) can be found in an article on the Greek site “ Alfa Vita ”. The article from March 1 also reported on the riots.
The picture of several people in front of the border crossing also seems to be real; it can only be found once on TinEye, for the first time on February 29th, the same day that Erdogan opened the border .

Neither our Correctiv colleagues nor we could find the picture of the children under a corrugated iron roof anywhere, but it appears in a Greek article from March 2, 2020 .
The pictures of the grenades are most likely real too. Although we were unable to determine the exact time of the recordings, several media outlets that tear gas was used at the border crossing.

Conclusion
From the collection of images you can clearly see the “emotional pressure” that is supposed to be built up with the images shared:
While the real images only show objects, smoke and masked people, which do not really affect you emotionally, the two images that have the strongest emotions are of all things evoke – the bleeding man with the child in his arms, the crying mother with child – not current!
