Many people are therefore wondering whether switching providers currently makes sense. The Thuringia Consumer Center explains what customers should pay attention to when switching electricity providers.
Switching providers is becoming more and more attractive
In August 2022, the average electricity price for households was around 40 cents per kilowatt hour. Since then he has remained at a high level. How much providers increase their prices also depends on how they have previously procured their electricity.
“Providers who have purchased months or years in advance on the futures market pay less. “Some electricity suppliers have been able to keep prices stable, while others have doubled their prices.”

Check price increases carefully
If you want to compare tariffs when changing provider, you must first find out the conditions of the current contract. This information can be found in the contract documents or in the last invoice.
“If your provider has not yet raised its prices or has only raised them moderately, then stay with your tariff. If there is a price increase, first check your documents to see whether you have a price guarantee. In this case, the price increase could be ineffective.”

Even after a price increase, the current tariff may still be the best option. Electricity customers should not cancel their contract too quickly in the current situation.
Basic care as an alternative
While local basic suppliers used to be comparatively expensive, basic supply tariffs can currently be the cheapest option for many households. However, there are pitfalls.
“Some primary care providers push new customers into the more expensive alternative care without any legal basis. The legal advice from the consumer advice center can help here.”

If you can't find a suitable tariff from your basic supplier, you can, for example, look for tariffs from other municipal utilities and energy suppliers. Comparison portals can provide guidance, but many of the prices there are not current.
No cheap rates available
Are you only able to find expensive tariffs despite an extensive search?
“Then you should sign a contract that you can cancel after a short period of time. This gives you flexibility if the situation on the electricity market changes.”
